Auckland: City and Country – May 2020
Welcome to our first tour of Auckland and beyond. Touch the east coast and west coast, and north to Matakana.
If you plan to visit the Auckland Art Fair at the beginning of May 2020, why not extend your stay and join us as we explore Auckland central, north and west. Spend a day out west visiting McCahon House, Te Uru Gallery and Piha. North of Auckland we visit Matakana village and Brick Bay for its wine tasting and sculpture trail. Finish your time with us discovering central Auckland’s multitude of dealer galleries, art spaces and artist studios and of course the magnificent Auckland Art Gallery and TSB Wallace Arts Centre.

We will be using the Hotel Grand Windsor as our hotel of choice in Auckland, and will include a ticket to the Auckland Art Fair, and a daily tour by luxury small coach to discover the diversity of art and culture on offer in Tamaki Makaurau.

Wednesday 29 April 2020
Central: We will wander down to the waterfront, past Auckland Art Fair and for our first stop visit Michael Parekowhai’s The Lighthouse. This work will locate us within the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland and contemporary New Zealand.
Wander back toward the city, up high street and Lorne street, visiting Gow Langsford Gallery and on to Auckland Art Gallery. Here we will New Zealand’s art history, and learn about the history of one of New Zealand’s most prestigious collections, its origins, the building from the 1880s to its major refit in the 2000s and on to today.
After lunch we will board the bus to the TSB Wallace Arts Centre, and on our return stop in fr coffee and a chat at Anna Miles Gallery, just off Queens Street.
Arrive back in town around 5pm. Evening free
Thursday 30 April 2020
West: We depart downtown by minibus today for the west. Our first stop is McCahon House, then up to Te Uru Gallery, and an opportunity for lunch nearby. This area is Titirangi, part of Auckland’s west, in the Waitakere foothills. After lunch we board the bus for Piha, to experience the ruggedness of our wild west coast.
Time permitting we will stop in at Corban Estate on our way home.
Friday 1 May 2020
Today we take a break from travelling, and dedicate our day to the Auckland Art Fair. We will convene in the hotel bar early evening to recap on the amazing work we have seen today.
Saturday 2 May 2020
An early start beckons this morning to avoid the queues heading to Matakana Market, an hour North of Auckland. This beautiful area is full of food, wine, art and beaches. After Matakana village we stop in at Omaha Beach to put our toes in the Pacific Ocean, and enjoy the long golden beach.
We stop at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail for lunch and a wander around the trail, past ponds, up trails and through bush, past many amazing works along the way.
We return to Auckland by 5pm.
Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner with your new friends, and talk about where you will go next.
